Welcome members to the first edition of the Blu-ing Magazine for season 2023/24 and what a season we have in store for you! Excitement plus and we can’t wait to see you all back at the club starting with Surf Patrols, Surf Sport training, Nipper and our Social Sundays which by the way continue to run as I speak!
Thanks to those members that attended the Clubs recent July 30 AGM. Officer bearers are listed on the website for your information but of note is the changing of the guard in our very important Life Saving Department with Nicole Cooney standing down and moving back into the vital position of Education Coordinator and the highly capable Darren Saunders stepping up as Director of Lifesaving. In Blu-ing editions to follow we will be introducing some of our key volunteers and the roles they will be playing throughout the season so please continue to monitor your emails. In this edition we will be providing you with key dates, events and information that you should read starting immediately so please read on! Also contained within this article is the very comprehensive annual report which has already been shared via Social Media and our impressive website! Please, if you’re not on Facebook think about jumping on even if only to follow South Maroubra Surf Life Saving Club. Much important and timely information is shared via this platform, we’d hate you to miss out! Patrols With flags going up in just over 6 weeks our Lifesaving Department will be sharing this years patrol roster. Much work goes into this roster so a big thank you to our leadership team in putting this together. Surf Life Saving Awards of Excellence On Saturday 26/8, Noah Teitler and Nicole Cooney are in the running for state recognition. We join together wishing them the very best at this prestigious event. Gotcha4Life fundraiser We encourage you to support this fundraising effort by either rowing on one of our 5 erg machines in the Heritage room starting Saturday 9th and running for 24 continuous marathon hours or by donating a few dollars which will go towards mental health. Farewell to John Marks Life Members On Sunday 3rd of September members of the Marks family will be heading to the club with the Ashes of our much loved friend and Life Member John Marks. As per John's wishes, his ashes will be scattered in front of his beloved club in a traditional surf boat ceremony. Details are being finalised but we expect time to be around 12.30pm. After the ceremony family and members will come together to remember John and his long and invaluable association with the Club. You're invited to come on down and say farewell to one of our best! Looking forward to seeing you all soon. Paul ‘Stretch’ Fownes APM OAM
