Club and Ocean Swim Sponsorship. Our club is a fantastic club on the back of its members and sponsors who contribute funding in support of all areas of operation. Whether it's nipper boards, rescue equipment, tents, boats, club bus and so on, much is donated.
Recently our club lost one of its major sponsors after the company entered merger talks. This leaves a major gap in our funding - so we’re reaching out to each one of you, as many of you are associated with large reputable companies, for a leg up! Major sponsors come in the form of $10k plus annually, so if you can ask around or perhaps you are an executive or part of a senior management team, do your bit to keep our club and this community strong! Oh yeah, with our very popular Ocean Swim approaching in April we’re still on the hunt for a Naming Rights Sponsor @ $5k. Great opportunity to get your name blasted on the day but also in all forms of social media promoting and informing participants as we approach event day. Plenty of positives so please feel free to come forward by emailing [email protected]
Club Competition, we are now in full training for what is going to be a very busy next couple of months leading up to State Age Championships for Nippers and State Titles for seniors followed by Australian Titles in Queensland. We encourage all of our competitors to get stuck right into training to give yourself every opportunity to do the best you can at these major sporting events.
Congratulations to our SRC and Bronze Squads that have completed or undertaking their courses. Our future is secure with such great lifesavers coming through. Thank you to our band of Instructors led by Hunter for their commitment, and hoping to increase our instructor numbers. See your Patrol Captain, Hunter or Nicole to get a little more involved in Education.
Sunday Socials and event bookings. We’ve had some great Social Sundays which continue every Sunday 11am to 5pm to the end of April and plenty of private hire bookings within our Heritage Lounge which accommodates all types of parties up to 120 people. Whether it’s a more casual wedding, birthday parties (excluding 18ths and 21st) there’s no better private location to have your event. Special booking rates apply to members so take advantage of this opportunity. More information on our website under the heading of FUNCTIONS.
SLSNSW Covid Policy requires all members aged 13 years and older who are undertaking Frontline Volunteer Activities which include all roles on patrols, surf sports competitors, coaches and officials, support services roles, UAV pilots, Age Managers, as well as Trainers/Assessors and Facilitators must be fully vaccinated against COVID19. Nippers not performing SRC duties whilst not required to be vaccinated along with parents assisting (excluding water safety and age mangers) are encouraged to be vaccinated. Some strict exemptions apply. Remember when attending any SLS event including carnivals, evidence of vaccination may be required to be produced plus RAT may be required.
A personal message from Barry and Lesley our caretakers, please do your bit to look after the club. It could be as simple as keeping toilets clean after use, washing feet of sand before entering the club, including the gymnasium, such as putting weights away after use. Barry has said, if it's not ok at home then it's not ok at your club!
Look forward to seeing you at our Fitness Class, Social Sundays, Sportspersons Day or Carnivals!

New SRC and Bronze holders!
December and January were a couple of busy months for our trainers. We ran two, four day intensive courses, and as a result have 60+ new lifesavers. First up in December we ran the SRC intensive which saw 45 of our nippers start their lifesaving journey. Then in the new year we upgraded our existing SRC to their Bronze medallion.
The intensive format is new for our club and trainers, but was well received all around. A big thank you to our trainers - Nicole Cooney, Isabella Garay, Angelina Garay, Codie Wem, Remi Defina-Sperando, Hunter Perry, Sarah Teitler, Maria Garay and Kai Jones for your help on the courses!
See more pictures on our Facebook and instagram pages of the squads in action.
With the ease on lockdowns and restrictions due to Covid, we have been able to lock in some dates for our education calendar:
19 February - Advanced Resuscitation Techniques 3 April - Provide First Aid Course ($80 at members cost) 16 April - Advanced Resuscitation Techniques
If you're interested in any of these courses please contact Hunter at [email protected]
Note: IRB Crew and drivers courses will kick off in the pre 2022/23 season so if you're interested in either of these courses note your interest with Laurie - [email protected]
We're also kicking off SRC and Bronze Medallion Squads. It's not too late to jump on board. If you're interested contact Hunter ASAP.
To our wonderful nipper families,
Happy New Year! I hope you all have had a wonderful break and are looking forward to kicking on with some fabulous nipper sessions.
We finished 2021 with a bang with the Xmas Scramble. Lots of fun on the day with Santa paying a special visit, lollies, popcorn & fairy floss for the nippers, christening of our new club bus, afternoon band chills and plenty of cold drinks with our nipper families. A fantastic afternoon was had by all.
There's some much Nipper News - read the full update here! Including -
Syd & Aiden's rescue, the Touring Team Camp, our Annual Trivia Night (check out all our sponsors) as well as a call for more helpers for our awesome Nipper Program.
Nominated for December Rescue of the Month by Ashleigh Breaden Date: Saturday 17th December 2021 about 3pm Who: Hugo Defina-Sperando, Kane Mcauliffe, Vectis Buckett
A dad and his three young children were playing in the shallows near the rip, we noticed this and I deployed a roving patrol but all of a sudden the rip took them and they were immediately in trouble. Our young lifesavers ran down there with tubes and a board, Kane on the board and Hugo and Vectis went out with the tubes. The dad could only hang onto his youngest child of around 4 years but he couldn't reach the other 2. The boys all worked together and brought them back to safety, navigating the waves and current. Without the speed of these boys this family would not be whole and the situation would have ended very differently. Especially noteworthy was Hugo then went on to perform two more rescues that patrol, all of them lifesaving and working well with our lifeguards. Hugo and Kane aren't on my regular patrol but I was especially happy to have them that day, their efforts were invaluable and they are proactive, courageous and an absolute credit to our community.
South Maroubra Ocean Swim
Ocean Swimming is back at South Maroubra! We'll host the South Maroubra Ocean Swim on April 24 April 2022. There are three race distances - 500m, 1Kkm and 2.5km. There are so many ways you can help out too! Follow our pages on Facebook and Instagram @southmaroubraoceanswim and share our posts to promote the swim. We'll also need a bunch of water safety on the day, so put the date in your calendar as we'll make a call for the WS workforce in the new year.
The competition season is well underway in the lead up to State and Aussie later in the season. Sydney Branch Championships 2021/22
Our Nippers and Senior club members competed at the Sydney Branch Championships over the weekend 5-6 February. Despite the weather and conditions, which saw all water events moved to Yarra Bay, it looks like everyone had a bit of fun!
