Celebrating 40 Years of Women in Surf Life Saving - SAVE THE DATE
Sunday 1 November 2020 South Maroubra was one of the first clubs in the branch to accept female members as surf life savers in season 80/81 – a moment in time which the Club will continue to benefit from forever. As you would have all seen on many forms of media, Surf Life Saving Australia are now in the season of celebrating 40 years of Women in SLS. South Maroubra has scheduled into our calendar for season 20/21 that we will dedicate our Sunday Social 1st November to ‘Women in SLS’. We have been fortunate to have many trail blazing pioneering women in our club who were there in the 80’s and beyond who put our club on the map whether it be in Surf Sports, Patrolling, Education or Leadership. Whilst South Maroubra was lucky enough to have the assistance of many females in the club prior to 1980 - the significance of 1980/81 was their acceptance as active members to become surf lifesavers and patrol. Our dedicated Sunday will be no fuss, purely an opportunity for the Club to acknowledge and welcome friendships old and new and share stories of the pioneering days of females becoming surf lifesavers and being able to wear the red and yellow on our beach. Normal bar refreshments will be available served by our wonderful licensee at member prices and who knows there might even be a good old sausage sizzle on the bbq. Watch this space!!! We invite as many members past and present, families and friends, to join us on this day to celebrate 40 Years of Women in SLS and in particular South Maroubra. The only formality of the day will be a PPT of photos of as many South Maroubra female surf life savers as possible which will play continually during the afternoon. For us to achieve this photograph display, we need members past and present to email photos of females of the club so we can include them. Email your photos to: [email protected] We would also like to reach out to the original female members who gained their Bronze Medallion season 1980/81 namely - Helen Veale, Aileen Wilson, Bronwyn Roberts, and to the females who gained their Qualifying Certificate - Patricia Beasley (Thompson)*, Gillian Cargill, Renee Dever, Michele Stuart*, Kathy Mazzeri*, Jenny Love, Kim MacDonald, Tracy Smith, Deanna Coco to invite them to join us on November 1st at the Club. Any member, friend or family who can assist with providing contact details of these ladies, please send me an email. [email protected] *I already have contact details for these past members We would encourage word of mouth invitations to join us on this date so we will rely on all members to share this information with any present or past female member of the club and their family to join us from 12 noon on Sunday 1 November 2020. Keep posted of whats happening at the club on our website and facebook.
