OUR PROGRAMOur Nipper program has been running since 1966 and offers a fun and active lifestyle choice for children between 5 and 13 years, as well as a solid base for learning important surf lifesaving skills. Our junior lifesavers in training are taught everything from sun and surf safety, to beach sprints and board paddling, all the way to life saving skills such as CPR and water rescues. We aim to provide our nippers with the confidence, skills and understanding of the beach and surf environment. We are highly focused on providing an environment that is fun, inclusive, family-friendly and focused on developing our nippers into our future lifesavers.
While our weekly activities focused around the nippers – it’s not just about the kids! Our program encourages parents to get involved, whether it's helping with teaching beach activities to the kids or gaining your Bronze Medallion and becoming a valued volunteer lifesaver yourself. Nippers can start once they turn 5 years old. The first two years of Nippers are spent in the Under U6’s and U7's, where we focus on fun and games on the beach. Teaching the kids the basic skills and awareness of surf safety. From the U8's through to U14's we have a structured program that includes skill development activities in both the beach and water environment, and an integrated education program that develops basic resuscitation, first aid, and rescue skills. Nippers runs for about 1-1.5 hours depending on weather, conditions, program, helpers and so on. Nipper activities include (although not limited to) wading, board paddling (U9’s to U14’s), swimming, beach sprints and beach flags as well as lots of fun activities and games designed to teach and improve all surf skills. Often when starting out with Nippers you will have a lot of questions, don't worry we have you covered... check out our Nippers FAQ page including details about to register! |
EDUCATIONOur Nippers participate in a progressive Surf Education program (Surf Ed) providing them with the skills and knowledge of beach safety rules and basic first aid.
Nippers in the U8 to U14 age groups can compete in local carnivals several times during the season, although not compulsory, nippers are encouraged to participate, as these actvities provide a platform to develop further their social skills whilst representing our club in a beach environment. We pride in our well developed coaching program, nippers have the opportunity to enhance their board paddling, surf (swim) skills and beach running skills during the season. Training is available on weekday afternoons and weekends to further develop skills, with our qualified and experienced coaches. |
