Junior Surf Sports is the competitive arm of our Nippers program — a natural extension of the skills every Nipper builds on a normal Sunday. Where the core Nippers program focuses on surf education and water safety awareness, Junior Surf Sports gives kids the chance to test those same skills — swimming, board paddling, beach sprints, beach flags and more — against Nippers from other clubs, while building fitness, resilience and friendships along the way. Competition is open to Nippers from Under 9 (limited carnivals allow U8's) onward, once they've met the relevant skills evaluation for their age group, and it's entirely optional — every Nipper takes part in the core Sunday program, and only those who want to go on to train and compete need to. Every event has a genuine lifesaving basis: board races mirror a rescue paddle-out, beach flags builds the reaction speed to reach a casualty first, and team events like the Board Rescue simulate a real rescue. It's competitive sport with a purpose. From here, the pathway grows with your Nipper — starting with intra-club and local interclub carnivals, then on to Sydney Branch Championships, SLSNSW State Age Championships, and for our older competitors, the Australian Championships. Wherever your family is starting from, our Nippers Touring Team Manager and junior coaches are here to help your Nipper find the right level to enjoy the journey. Ready to find out more? Our full Competition Team Information Booklet covers everything from age groups and skills evaluations through to uniforms, training, carnival day expectations, and how to get involved as a family — read it and register your interest here to receive updates on the 2026-27 Competition Information session to be held at the beginning of the season and how to join the team.
