Mark the end of the season with our very own South Maroubra Ocean Swim
It’s going to be a celebration as awesome as the swim itself, on Sunday April 23rd For our annual ocean swim, we’re going all out to ensure a great day for swimmers of all abilities and their sun-loving supporters. First up? a 500m swim for 9- to 12-year-olds at 8.30am. We know how many amazing young swimmers we have in this club - so we hope there will be plenty of contenders in these home waters - some battling for line honours, others making memories as they complete their very first ocean swim. Sign them up! The 1km swim will follow at 9.15am, for anyone aged 13 years and up. Swimmers will head out near the rockpools, towards the first turning marker. It’s then only short swim north before turning back towards the surf club and the satisfaction of the finish line. At 9.40am we will commemorate Anzac Day, just before the 2.5km swim at 10am. Also open to anyone 13 years and over, the 2.5km course heads further along the Malabar Headland before the turning buoy. The next turn is in line with Maroubra SLSC, and swimmers will traverse back towards South Maroubra before catching a wave to the finish. Easy. We’d like to thank in advance our volunteer base who will be out in force both on land and in the water on IRBs, boards and inshore, setting up a safe swim for all participants. All entry fees directly contribute to the purchase of vital lifesaving equipment. Prizes are on offer for 1st, 2ndand 3rd prizes in all age categories as well as for elite swimmers, with the main presentation at 12 noon rounding out the formalities. Of course we’ll have the BBQ firing from dawn, music all day with a live band from 12.30pm. And with massage tents and ice baths provided by Recoverie Coogee it’s clearly a healthy choice to stay around and make a day of it! So register today to be a part of it: https://bit.ly/RegisterSthBraSwim Supported generously by again by Maroubra Seals, Randwick City Council, Recoverie Coogee, Engine Swim, Home Estate Agents, Core Mortgage Brokers, Vlad Swim, Switch, Budgy Smuggler, Parisi’s, Delfina and Look Design. Meanwhile we also had representation over in Perth in January at the Australian National Open Water with a credible 5th in the 15 YO Boy's 5km (1:04:03) from Vectis Buckett and 7th in the 16 YO Girls 5km (1:02:58) from Jasmin Alexiou
What’s your full name? Nicole Cooney
Do you have a nickname and how did you get it? Most people at the club call me Cooney - when I joined there were a couple Nicole's so it made it easier. What’s your current position in the club? I'm currently the Director of Lifesaving Services How long have you been in the role ? This season is my 5th season in the role. When did you first join? 20 September 2013 Can you tell us about your lifesaving journey? I had thought about becoming a lifesaver for years, having grown up on Maroubra beach. Having lived overseas much of my schooling life I never did nippers, but I was in the ocean before I could walk. I finally bit the bullet and did so in 2013. I had already met members from South Maroubra through the gym I was training at, and that is how I chose the Club. Thanks Brad, Matt and Linda! I got my bronze and most other awards in my first season, including my IRB crews because I was told I just had to race IRBs (thanks Brad and Matt!). Very quickly I got into award training and soon took over from the great Ray Robbo looking after training the SRC, he taught me all he knew. Since then I have seen the kids I trained grow into young adults and mentored many of them, it's been one of my greatest pleasures. By my third season I was a Patrol Captain, and by my fourth season I joined the Board of Management as the Hon Secretary & Registrar. I spent two years in the Secretary role before becoming the Director if Lifesaving Services. It has been a great, and often times challenging, ten years but I have enjoyed every part of it. What positions have you held in the club? Patrol Captain, Trainer, Hon Secretary and Registrar, Director of Lifesaving Services, Education Coordinator, IRB Coordinator Any highlights? To be honest there are a lot of highlights. Since join the club 10 years ago I have tried a lot of things including IRB racing and Surf Boat rowing - both exhilarating and terrifying at the same time. I love lifesaving and in particular training new lifesavers and have been awarded Sydney Branch Trainer of the Year twice. It's an honour to be nominated by the club and to have won. Being a part of it all has been a highlight! What does the future hold and any advice to fellow members? South Maroubra has a promising future. Since joining I have seen all sections grow and go from strength to strength. We have some amazing lifesavers and future leaders at our club and I am excited to see what the next chapter holds for them. My advice is to get involved, there are so many ways to do so - that suits your lifestyle and time. All you can do is give it a go! ARTC Course Looking to upskill? New Year/New Skills! We are running our first ARTC intensive for the 22-23 season on Saturday 18th Feb from 8am-2pm. Please submit your EOI or ask any questions to Codie at [email protected] First aid certificate course – March We will run a first aid course over two Tuesday evenings on 14 and 21 March. Open to members 14+ years, and cost $70. Places are limited. If you’re interested email Nicole at [email protected] Sisters in the Surf Patrol – Saturday 11 March Join us for the Sisters in the Surf Patrol in March. Sisters in the Surf is a special patrol which celebrates the 40+ years of women joining the Surf Lifesaving movement. While we encourage female members to celebrate and volunteer, we value the contributions of all members, and any patrolling member is welcome to volunteer and support this patrol. You can come for a few hours or the whole day. Use the link to register your availability https://forms.gle/A5PRYSL9wST1Su8q9 Patrol Parking A reminder please to all members to only use the Surf Rescue Parking spots when you are rostered for patrol. Our patrolling members are increasingly having issues getting parking spots as members are using the spots when not on patrol. At the same time if you do ever find the need to park within the club area, remember access is required to the lifesaving shed and space at all times. This is emergency access, as well as the lifesaving trailers. Your vehicle risks damage parked within the area. Members, a belated welcome to 2023 and what a start to the new year we have had here at South Maroubra.
So many events run and won to date including our traditional ‘Respect, Reflect and Celebrate’ Australia Day bbq, followed by our very Sportspersons Day fundraising event for our Aussie Touring team heading to Western Australia in March. We followed this event with resumption of Nippers, Branch Titles for Youth, Masters and Open competitors. Our fitness class for members ‘Over 40’ resumed and still welcomes members over 40. Emily Henville and Chris Kondilios from Nippers represented our club in the Branch Junior Lifesaver of the Year competition, both finalists. Yes, there’s more, with our club hosting sponsors lunch recognising and thanking the individuals and companies that support the work our members do and the invaluable contribution to our community our club makes on so many fronts and finally, we finished the run of events to date with Nipper State Touring Team Trivia fundraiser in Horizons! Wow, what a world wind 2 months in 2023! Pleasingly we have had outstanding service from our Lifesavers over the festive season with records crowds on our beach, consistent large numbers at South Maroubra that I haven’t seen in many years. Surf conditions were equally challenging but handled really well by our well trained and equipped lifesavers. Bronze and SRC training has resumed, a special ‘Sisters in the Surf’ patrol recognising 40 years of women in lifesaving takes place on March 11 with all female members welcome to join this nostalgic occasion. In brief;
And that’s a wrap for now, see you on Sunday! Paul ‘Stretch’ Fownes APM OAM President. Skills maintenance – only a couple more opportunities!
Our primary role is to protect the public visiting our beach and making rescues where needed. In order to do this, we need to ensure our lifesavers have maintained all the skills covered to keep the beach safe. Bronze Medallion and ARTC Skills Maintenance will contain both online and practical requirements this season. You MUST complete both online and practical portions to be sign off as proficient! The online portion needs to be complete before attending the practical session or we will not be able to process your proficiency. The online portion can be accessed through your Members Area account, in the eLearning section. If you cannot find it in the 'My Training' section please look for the Skills Maintenance 2022/23 (SRC or BM) in the training library and enrol. Remaining practical dates are as follows: You will need to enrol online for the date you wish to attend. This is done through e-Learning. Here is a guide on how to do it! Meet in the Heritage room for the following Skills Maintenance: SM3 - Saturday 10 December SRC - 8.30am BM - 9.30am SM4 - Sunday 18 December SRC - 10am BM - 11am Meet in the Lifesaving Shed for following Skills Maintenance: IRB Drivers & Crew Saturday 18 December 7am You must be proficient in order to patrol. Any questions to our Lifesaving team at [email protected] Checking your patrol hours With the season well underway, it’s a good time to remind you to please check your patrol hours now and then. You can check them in the Members Portal. It’s really hard for us at the end of the season to re-open patrol logs to have hours checked and fixed. It’s inevitable that your hours may not be logged properly, as the patrol ops app seems to be quite buggy this season. If you make a habit of checking your hours now and then we can fix them up quickly for you. If you do find an error, please get in touch with Ash at [email protected] Check your roster and finding subs Leaving it to the last minute to find a sub for your patrol is highly unadvisable, as success is quite low. Please do not wait for the patrol reminder text to look for a sub. You can find your roster online here, note your dates and plan ahead. Make sure you’re a part of the Club’s subs Facebook group or use the members portal to request a sub. Use the how to find a sub guide. IRB Drivers – please use the Club’s IRB drivers WhatsApp group for driver subs PCs – please use the Club’s PC WhatsApp group to find a sub New IRB Drivers and Crew A massive congrats to our newest IRB drivers and crew who went through their assessment over the last two weekend. The IRB is a vital lifesaving resource on our beach and having skilled operators is key to our lifesaving service. I’d also like to thank all the trainers who helped get them through, your help is very much appreciated. Lifesaving gear maintenance A quick reminder how important it is to report any broken gear. There is no way for us to replace or repair equipment if we don’t know it’s broken or not working as it should. Please do let us know as a soon as possible so we can move faulty gear out of service. You can report issues to Nicole at 0413025512 or [email protected], or to Darren at 0410 622 009 or [email protected] Key lifesaving contacts Now that the season is well underway a quick reminder of who to contact within the lifesaving team with any queries or concerns: Can’t make patrol? Contact your Patrol Captain (their phone number is on the patrol teams list) Got an education question? Contact Codie on [email protected] Patrol log not right or not submitted. Please register your interest on this form It has been a very busy start to the season with lots of nipper action at the beach and competition in full swing. Thanks to you all, South Maroubra is once again the LARGEST nipper club in AUSTRALIA! With over 1100 nippers including cadets, congratulations to you all for joining the best club in the east.
We are so thankful to all of our volunteers for running this great program. Nothing makes me happier than seeing our cadets helping out with the younger age groups, volunteering their time to teach others what they have learned. We are also very excited to introduce the Nipper Club Captains for season 2022/2023, Christopher Kondilios & Emily Henville They are supported by their amazing Nipper Committee: Grace Madden, Isabella Di Blasio, Lilly Carter, Amy Dickson, Willow Skeen, Carter Hughes, Zack Stanilovskiy, Aiden Renford and Daniel Driscoll. Each month they will be putting together a Nipper Committee Newsletter, keeping us all up to date with what's been going on at the club. They also have some fantastic fundraising ideas in progress. CLICK HERE to read their first edition. The last nipper session for this year will be on Sunday 18th December. Mark it in your diaries. It's going to be a fantastic Xmas celebration with our annual Xmas Scramble, visit from Santa, BBQ, entertainment and much much more. More information to come out closer to the date. Looking forward to seeing you all on the beach. Peter Kondilios Director of Youth Development Competition Update - November 2022
There has been some amazing results across all disciplines by our members since the beginning of the season: Triple Crown Round 1 - Wanda On Saturday 15 October 2022 3 members (Georgie Kiernan, Vectis Buckett and Charlie White) competed in round 1 of the Sydney Branch Triple Crown Series at Wanda. Each round consists of 3 surf races and 3 board races. (This round however only had 2 surf races due to conditions). The carnival is split into 2 age groups, Youth (u15) and Open (u17, u19, Opens, Masters). Georgie & Vectis were fortunate that they are at the upper end of their age group, while Charlie was at the bottom end of his age group. When you see the results below, you'll realise that this did not phase Charlie. In tricky conditions there were some great performances from all three of our members. Their results are as follows: Georgie (Youth female) Swim 1 – 4th | Swim 2 – 3rd | Board 1 – 2nd | Board 2 – 1st | Board 3 - 1st Vectis (Youth male) Swim 1 – 4th | Swim 2 – 3rd | Board 1 – 6th | Board 2 – 4th | Board 3 – 5th Charlie (Open male) Swim 1 – 6th | Swim 2 – 1st | Board 1 – 10th Sydney Water Round 2 (Interbranch Trials Opens) Aidan Renford U14: 7th iron, 3rd swim but given 4th, 6th board Georgie Kieran U15: Iron 6th, Swim 4th, Board 2nd. Jasmin Alexiou U15: Iron 2nd, Swim 1st, Board 7th Charlie White U17: Iron 7th, Swim 6th, Ski 7th Vectis Buckett U15: 8th surf race, 8th Iron man Chris Kondilios U14: 1st Flags, 1st sprint Jess Henville U15: 2nd flags, 3rd sprint Josh Ballard U15: 1st flags Luke Newrick U15: 1st sprint, 2nd flags Ruby Gray U17: 1st sprint, 1st Flags Wanda One Club Carnival On Saturday 26th November, we sent a small but committed team to the Wanda One Club carnival to participate in one of the biggest carnivals of the season. It is the only carnival of the season that has a combined point score from Nippers through to Masters, meaning it really is ONE CLUB. With the assistance of our Junior friends, I am extremely proud to announce that we finished second, only to the host club Wanda, who had a much bigger senior team in attendance. There were some late changes to logistics for the day due to expected surf conditions and a lack of a vital element for a surf carnival - a beach. Due to these circumstances, the Nippers water was moved to Cronulla , the sand competitors were asked to attend North Cronulla. Just to confuse things a bit more - the 1 and 2 km runners were at Wanda first before heading to other locations for the rest of their events. The u14s to Masters surf events and all R&R events remained at Wanda. It may have been ONE CLUB, but it was three beaches. YOUR MEMBERS who represented YOU were Ruby Gray (u17), Luke Newrick and Jessica Henville (both u15) in the sand events, while Jasmine Alexiou, Maddie Chesher, Genevieve Dommel, Georgie Kiernan and Vectis Buckett (all u15) were our water representatives. Jessica got the day off to a great start with a dominant performance winning the 2km run and backed it up with a 3rd place in the flags. Ruby blitzed the competition once again, grabbing the chocolates in both the Flags and Sprint event. While Luke pitted himself against the older u17 boys in the flags and came home with a 3rd place, while winning the u15 sprint. Over in the wet stuff our u15 girls Cameron Relay (Jasmine, Georgie and Isabella (u14)) were unlucky not to stand on the top step of the podium, finishing second in a tight finish with a strong Manly team. While there wasn't a Surf Teams event, the performance of our girls in the u15's would have taken 1st place by some margin, with exceptional swims from Jasmine (2nd), Georgie (4th), Genevieve (11th) and Maddie (15th). This was backed up in the Ironperson event with Georgie (4th) and Jasmine (9th) showcasing their skills in tricky conditions. The final event of the day was the board race. This is Georgie's pet event and she showed everyone on the beach why, pushing the reigning Australian Champion all the way to finish 2nd. Jasmine also performed well in her least favourite event, making the final. Over in the boys water area, Vectis had a love/hate relationship with the board, so we'll focus on his Surf race, where he has taken his performances to another level this year, finishing 5th in an extremely competitive field. That is it for local carnivals for this year. We'll keep training over the Christmas break before getting back into the racing in January. Qld State Open Water Swimming Championships - Coolum Beach, Sunshine Coast Jasmine Alexiou competed in the 14 years 5km open water swim at the Queensland State Open Water Swimming Championships on 15 October. She completed the race in 4th position (just missing 3rd place by less than 9 seconds) in a personal best time of 1:02:35.80; Jasmine lowered her personal best time (1:10:40.73) set at the Australian Championships in January 2022 by more than 8 minutes. Jazz is now ranked #1 in NSW for 5km open water swimming for her age (previously #7) & ranked #4 nationally (previously #13). An amazing achievement given she is only at the start of her preparation for the new open water & surf lifesaving season which culminates in the Australian Open Water Championships in January 2023, State SLS Champs in February 2023 & Aussies in March 2023. Interbranch Team Selection After some amazing results at the Interbranch Team selection carnivals it was no surprise that South Maroubra is well represented in the Sydney Branch Team. Congratulations to the following Clubbies for making it into the teams: U17 Female - Ruby Gray U15 Male - Luke Newrick U15 Female - Jasmine Alexiou U15 Female - Jessica Henville U15 Female - Georgie Kiernan (reserve) U14 Male - Chris Kondilios U14 Male - Aidan Renford (reserve) U13 Male - Rory Muldowney U12 Male - Krishna Inder NSW Waratahs Slightly unrelated to Surf Lifesaving but wonderful news that our Clubbie, Tom Farr Jones and (ex Clubbie Luca Cleverely) were been selected into the NSW Waratahs Under 16’s Squad. We would like to congratulate them on this wonderful achievement of being selected in a very talented squad and celebrate in their success - the team were unbeaten in a 5 match campaign and are the National Champs beating all other State Teams - well done. Finally thanks to Phil Stivano who has stepped down as Boat Coordinator responsibilities due to work commitments. A mid-season opening has arisen for Boat Coordinator (Captain). EOI to [email protected] What’s your full name? Uri Teitler
What’s your current position in the club? Hon Secretary & Public Officer How long have you been in the role ? This is my second year When did you first join? 2013 Can you tell us about your lifesaving journey? My wife Tracey would bring our first child, Sarah down for U6 and U7 on Sundays for Nipper whilst I would go out riding. When Sarah was in U8 and my second, Noah was in U6, Tracey explained that she couldn't be at two ends of the beach at the same time and that was the beginning of my adventure down at South Maroubra. By mid-season I realised it was going to be more interesting in the water than just watching so I enrolled in the next available Bronze Medallion and I was doing Water Safety by December. The next season I became Water Safety Co-ordinator and in 2016 Deputy Director of Youth which I held for 2 Years. Along the way I set out to collect at least one award/qualification a year .. started with Age Manager's then IRBC and IRB Driver, Officials Course, Silver Beach Management, Spinal, Advanced First Aid and most recently ARTC. Last year I was asked to join the Board and have been enjoying the role of Secretary since. What positions have you held in the club? Water Safety Co-ordinator, Deputy Director of Youth, Vice Captain of Patrol 15, Hon Secretary & Public Officer. I was also Deputy Director of Youth for Sydney Branch in 2021/22. Any highlights? I have very much enjoyed watching my family grow up and around the club to the extent that they feel like its their second home and we have established a whole new friendship group. We choose Sth Maroubra as we recognised that if the kids could learn to handle the surf here they could handle surf anywhere, but reality is that the club has given us so much more. Biggest highlights would be via the kids .. both being Junior Club Captains in their respective years and then both later on to become Youth Lifesaver of the Year for Sydney Branch. What does the future hold and any advice to fellow members? I'm excited about the future of the club. The Board has a grand vision for the physical club house and the strategic 5 year plan puts in place the foothold for a vibrant community organisation. The simple advice is get involved. The more you put in the more you get out of it and the better the place is for everyone. To paraphrase JFK .. 'Do not ask what your club can do for you .. ask what you can do for your Club' |
