Welcome to the June edition of the Bluing Newsletter. We hope you are recharging your batteries for the rapidly approaching 2024/25 season and looking forward to it as much as we are.
Since our last edition, much has been happening during the off-season including;
  • Ongoing club maintenance and repairs.
  • Our IRB Team have completed Round 1, 2, 3 at Avoca and next week will be heading off to Forster for the final Round 4 prior to State and Australian titles. We hope you’ve been watching their great success on our Facebook site along with plenty of action photos.
  • Our club also has competed in NSW Pool Lifesaving Championships with again fantastic success as also highlighted on our Facebook site. Well done to all members, coaches and supporters for your efforts during the off-season.
  • In May our club hosted a sellout crowd for our Presentation night in the Horizons Room. Wonderful company and recognition of our members contribution to a successful season. We also attended the Sydney Branch Awards of Excellence where some outstanding members were again recognised.
  • Dolphin Winter Swimmers have been underway for since May 1. Still not to late to join this hearty group of swimmers starting at Wylies Pool Coogee at 9am then back to the club for a nice warm lunch and refreshments. All ages are welcome!
  • World Championship expression of interest was circulated with a number of members and teams wishing to compete at the Gold Coast in August. Shane White is your point of contact!
So as you can see along with our Winter Social Sundays each and every Sunday rain, hail or shine which by the way have been extremely well attended by members and the public, its been a busy off-season.

So what’s coming up June/July?

  • We’re on the look out for potential boaties!
Our Boat Captain Nick Mellick has been busy preparing for next season with a new surf boat on order (see below sponsorship opportunity). Nick has asked me to send a message throughout the club inviting members 15, 16, 17, up to 30 years of age to contact him if keen to try out some rowing in the off-season. Nick and Jordan will be running some fun ‘have a go’ rowing days and a bbq at the club for interested members keen on aerobic, strength fitness training whilst forming new friends in a small team environment. This invitation extends to current members and also any of your friends particularly any still-water rowers or family friends that may have prior boat rowing experience. Non-members of course would need to do their Bronze medallion and carry out our core lifesaving business. Its going to be a great year ahead for our boaties! Ring Nick on 0430135551 if you or your mates would like to give it a try!

  • Sydney Branch Boaties Presentation!
Sunday week our club will be hosting all Sydney Club boat crews for their annual Seals Club Presentation Day. 1pm to 6pm which will work alongside our usual Social Sunday and NRL afternoon on the big screens. We’ll also have some live music on so be sure to pop on down!

  • Annual General Meeting!
As we do on the last Sunday of every July, South Maroubra SLSC will be hosting the annual AGM in Heritage Room on 28/7 at 2pm. Soon nominations will be distributed for positions critical to the running of the club. All members are welcome to attend this event but remember you must be financial to attend and vote or if intending on nominating for a vacant position you should be suitably qualified (Bronze medallion etc) and have the time necessary to do the job you’re nominating for, if in fact you are elected. Directors and committees of the club are presently working on their respective reports to be included in the annual report available to all members in August.

Plenty happening as you can see. I would ask you to please keep an eye out for potential club sponsors for lifesaving, competition and club house renovations. We are currently looking for one, or several companies/individuals for the new boat on order sponsorship, expected in September/October. We can provide a sponsorship proposal to you, but briefly cost is $38k x 4 years exposure, logos, names would be placed in primary and secondary positions on the boat and club house, website etc. A christening where sponsors would be involved followed by a light lunch and refreshments with crews and the club would be scheduled. It’s a rare opportunity to sponsor a traditional piece of lifesaving equipment, we’d love to hear from you!

See you next Sunday or on a Social Sunday!

YOUTH VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR - NOAH TEITLER

Noah started the season joining the South Maroubra IRB racing team and won at NSW State and a commendable 5th at Aussies. Noah become one of the youngest Branch members to receive the Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue and the Club’s youngest Age Manager, successfully taking on the U10 Boys Age Manager role with 49 boys under his care. Noah is regularly called upon by the South Maroubra Trainers to ‘role model’ board rescues for SRC and Bronze courses. He also extended himself further by volunteering as Sydney Branch Youth Lifesaving co-ordinator and Youth Social Media advisor. Thank you Noah for your exemplary Service

TRAINER OF THE YEAR - REM DEFINA-SPERANDO
Remi is a current trainer at South Maroubra where he is always ‘problem solving’ and or looking for better ways to do things in how training is delivered. He is always happy to offer extra sessions for candidates who may be struggling with certain skills and is eager to learn himself by taking steps to become an ART and IRB trainer this season, knowing these are areas where we need more trainers. Remi has also stepped up this season to learn the CTO role to be able to become a leader when needed. Well done Remi for a great training season.

BEACH SAFETY AWARENESS PROGRAM - SOUTH MAROUBRA (Ffyon McCabe)
Within her role as South Maroubra Youth Club Captain, Ffyon McCabe (SRC) was motivated to act, when she read the statistics that highlighted the fact that approximately 75 people drowned on our Australian beaches last year. With the support of the South Maroubra Nippers Committee and the club, Ffyon initiated a Beach Awareness Program that they hoped would reduce this statistic and make a difference in their community. The program was delivered successfully across 3 primary schools in the Randwick local government area for approximately 300 students, targeting kindergarten and Year 1 students. An amazing achievement Ffyon!

COACH OF THE YEAR - Andy Newrick

Andrew’s success with the South Maroubra beach team is very impressive. Andrew develops youth and open competitors to assist with training and mentor the younger athletes. Andrew has great results at Aussies 6 x gold, 4 x silver, 6 x bronze, NSW champs 22 x gold, 14 x silver, 16 x bronze. Branch champs 27 x gold, 20 x silver, 11 x bronze. Andrew’s development of his athletes in the team saw 7 of the athletes selected in the Sydney Branch interbranch team and all achieved excellent results and contributed to the achievement of Sydney branch at interbranch champs.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR 9-10 YEARS  |  MALE - NICHOLAS KONDILIOS
Nicholas is a well respected athlete and nipper who has a passion for the beach, surf lifesaving and competition. He is a quiet achiever and very humble with his accomplishments. Nicholas is a role model for his fellow nippers with his kind and caring nature.  He certainly is a talent and has a gift as a beach athlete which is demonstrated by the outstanding season of results Nicholas achieved. Results this season included :
  • State Championships – 3 gold and 1 silver medal.  Nicholas is a member of the back to back state champions All Age Beach Relay time from South Maroubra
  • Branch Championships – a complete set of medals – Gold, Silver and Bronze
  • Manly Nipper Nats  - 1 Gold, 1 Silver medal
  • Sydney Water rounds – Gold medals
  • Wanda Carnival – 3 gold medals
The impact of Nicholas achievements is something he is not aware of, because of his young age, however it is evident at weekly club nippers. His achievements show what you can become through training, having fun and enjoying what you do. Congratulations Nicholas on an outstanding season.
ATHLETE OF THE YEAR 13-14 YEARS  |  FEMALE - MARLI MAYNE
Marli was a member of the Sydney Branch team where she successfully won the beach sprint and flags for her age group. She was also selected in the NSW State Team where she repeated the wins as well as the beach relay.  Results this season included :
  • Branch Championships – 3 gold medals
  • State Championships – 2 gold medals
  • Aussie Youth Championships – 1 silver and 1 bronze medal
Marli has found her love again for this sport after a year off and her results speak for themselves. The camaraderie and respect her club mates have for each other are second to none and a lot of that is due to the South Maroubra club culture of family.  Completing her SRC award this season has also made her year so much more enjoyable as she is doing something for the community with her friends. Congratulations Marli on an outstanding season.

Ryan is a multi-talented athlete who has demonstrated sporting excellence this season with his main focus on pool rescue and lifesaving. However he is also a talented each events competitor. Ryan is a valued member of all his teams and he actively contributes to their success both in and out of the competition arena as a strong team player. Ryan is a positive role model taking time to mentor, encourage those around him at the Club. He is a wonderfully modest young man who has represented South Maroubra, Sydney Branch and NSW State this season with pride and excellence. Results this season included :
