It is with sadness that we have just learnt of the passing of much admired Life Member John Ludlow. It is our understanding John passed away in hospital today. Our thoughts are with  Merril and the Family at this sad time.

We hope to provide you with further information as it becomes available.

RIP John Ludlow.  Thank you for your contribution and commitment to our club, you will be sadly missed.

Position: SRC

Both these boys have shown a great interest in being great lifesavers. Always ready and alert on the flags, and keen to act on instinct. Despite being allocated to patrol 10, they often come along an support other patrols since achieving their SRC award.

Both were part of a joint effort rescue that highlighted their value as integral to the patrol. Their commitment and dedication is valued in their team and their club. Great job boys! Enjoy the pizza.

Patrol Member of the Month

Name: Ashleigh Wallis-Breaden
Patrol: 7
Position: BM

It was an extremely busy day and flags were placed to the North end. We were stretched for resources with everyone trying to keep people out of the rip forming south of the flags. The south end rip was attracting many people because of the location of the flags. 

Ashleigh stayed at the south end by herself for the whole patrol. She was diligent in keeping people safe.  However there was one person that got in trouble and she successful perform a rescue with a tube.

Name: Shane White
Patrol: AR3
Position: BM

​Shane was on patrol with AR 3 on Saturday morning 10 March, the conditions were very rough, only one set of flags were up due to the conditions and the South Maroubra patrol was responsible for the flagged area. At 9:30 am Shane noticed two swimmers in difficulty outside the southern end of the flagged area, Shane the beach inspector grabbed the rescuers boards and proceeded through the break, Shane reached his swimmer and assisted him back to the bank. The flagged area was then closed.

At 11:30 Shane assisted another swimmer when Shane noticed a woman in difficulty beyond the break, Shane grabbed the rescue tube and assisted the woman to shore. Well done Whitey!

A message from Steven Pearce AFSM - Chief Executive Officer SLSNSW

Today, Thursday 8 March 2018 marks the celebration of International Women’s Day. As such, I wanted to acknowledge, recognise and thank the wonderful women within our current and past lifesaving ranks and staff for the contributions that you have, are, and continue to provide to SLSNSW.
 
With over 42% of our membership being female, it is only prudent and just, we celebrate this day with you.
 
To think it was only back in 1981 that women were first allowed to become lifesavers and patrol our NSW coastline, we certainly have come a long way. One of the most remarkable stories of how women have contributed to SLSNSW was back in World War 2. With the war raging, 72 of Terrigal’s 76 patrolling surf club members had enlisted in the army, air force or navy. With just 4 male members left, there were not enough lifesavers to man the patrols, so their wives, girlfriends, sisters, daughters and female friends took over lifesaving duties.
 
In the face of enormous  community and social resistance, these women forged ahead regardless and went on to patrol Terrigal for 2 seasons in 1942 and 1943. These women were nothing less than pioneers!. There are many more examples.
 
Congratulations to all our SLSNSW women today, and thankyou again for the enormous contribution you provide to our organisation.

Name: Brett Milsop
Patrol: 12
Position: BM

Brett used his skills in treating a swimmer with significant blue bottle stings sustained while completing the South Maroubra Ocean Challenge. He was rostered on patrol 12 at the time of this incident. A fairly new BM with a keen attitude and a bedside manner that was worthy of his patient giving him praise in a letter.

Name: Carl Briscoe
Patrol: AR1
Position: Captain

Long time serving member, Carl runs his very small Active Reserve Patrol AR1 with exceptional management skills. Always on the ball and aware of all aspects of his patrol, and takes on complete ownership of all patrol members, equipment, and the beach.
